Arabic Message Board Arabic language message signs at checkpoints in Iraq have improved troop safety and saved the lives of Iraq travelers. In November 2008, electronic message signs replaced the standard stationary warning signs advising drivers to slow down as they approached checkpoints. Each message sign was equipped with a radar gun to detect the speed of approaching vehicles. The speed controlled the message that was displayed. The message changed from “Checkpoint ahead” to “Slow down” to “Slow down or be shot.” Checkpoint personnel monitored the real-time speed of the vehicle via a display on the back of the message sign. This allowed them to determine whether the vehicle was slowing within 1,000 feet – providing additional precious seconds to prepare a response. The USMC request, specifically 1MEF, 1st Marines Expeditionary Force base at Camp Pendleton, CA, came from a Major who had seen dynamic message signs used to alert drivers on U.S. highways. When this was first discussed, it was belived that “these message signs will save lives”, both US and foreign national. Field experience in Iraq since their deployment in November 2008 has proven that belief correct. One of the unique features of the sign is a rear facing display that shows the realtime speed of the approaching vehicle. This lets the staff at the checkpoint determine whether the car is slowing down in time to stop OR whether they need to respond in another way to the approaching vehicle.   The signs were built specifically to display an Arabic font set that was approved by the PIO group from the USMC. OUGHBOOK controllers are used to drive the signs. This allows different Arabic dialects and character sets to be loaded quickly and ready for display in a new location.
